Kyoto Protocol Comes into Force (2005)

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), or 1992 Earth Summit, produced a treaty aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but it failed to establish mandatory limits or enforcement provisions. The Kyoto Protocol is an amendment to the UNFCCC that establishes these limits.
